THE BRONX, NEW YORK

The first parkway in the country was the Bronx River Parkway. Its length is 13 miles and travels from The Bronx To Westchester (the Kensico Dam). It is 75 years old. Starting at Bruckner Blvd., it ends upstate in Valhalla. It runs parallel to the Bronx River which starts at the dam and ends at Soundview.

In the ”teens”, Morris Park, a thriving neighborhood was once the site of Morris Park Racetrack, a major horse track. It only lasted a few years.

Bartow Ave is named after a Rev. John Bartow. He owned land what is now Allerton Ave.-Eastchester Rd.-Pelham Parkway

Eastern Blvd.became Bruckner Blvd.

Lorillard's tobacco merchants, Peter Lorillard's snuffmill (now in the Bronx Botanical Garden)

Blackwell’s Island, a brutal prison located in the middle of the East River. It later became Welfare Island and today is known as Roosevelt Island.

Arthur Simon Flegenheimer (Dutch Schultz) was born on August 6, 1902 in the Bronx. Growing up in the tough Bergen and Webster Avenues.
